Changes are Coming

In an effort to consolidate where/how I spend my time on my blogs, I’m doing a little sprucing up around here.

First off, this site — Colin Wright Photography — will eventually become more of a portfolio site for me, rather than a blog site. I think that’ll serve me better, and keep my updates and writing happening in one place. Where will that be? Over at Phydeaux’ Deauxmayne.

Secondly (but happening first), over the next week or two, I’ll be taking the blog posts down from here and scooting them to Phydeaux, along with redesigning this site. I’m a one-man workforce, and my day job gets 40 hours of my time weekly, so it’s likely to be a slow transition, but I think it’ll be for the best. I’m also making some changes behind the scenes with the new publishing feature in Lightroom 3 that’ll make publishing new work easier, and something I should be able to do with more regularity.

Have patience, mind the dust, and if there are still things that aren’t working — broken links and the like — after mid-August, let me know, and I’ll try to get ‘em fixed.

Scott Kelby’s 3rd Annual Worldwide Photo Walk

After attending last year’s photo walk, I decided I wanted to contribute more this year, and have volunteered to lead a walk in St. Charles MO this year. This year’s WWPW will take place on July 24th, 2010, and, thanks to Amy and Sarah, we’ll be starting out at Framations, at 218 N Main Street in downtown St. Charles.

So, what’s a Worldwide Photo Walk, you ask?

It is the largest global social event for photographers, and this walk in St. Charles is just one part of it. Last year, over 900 photo walks were held with over 32,000 photographers of all skill levels participating. And the best part? It’s free!

Swinging in Time

After two days in the snow, it was time to come back inside the office and see what I could do with my pendulum. Pretty easy setup — set the pendulum up inside some black cloth, and get it moving. I set my 580EX II to strobe 15 times at 10hz across an exposure of 2 seconds. I had the flash set to 1/128th power, as the flash was only six or so inches away from the pendulum.

I made this image with my Canon 7D and 24-105/4L lens. I sucked it into Photoshop CS4E and applied a blur vignette through Nik Color Efex Pro.

Blue Chesspieces

Tonight, I pulled my old slide light table out, put a glass chessboard atop it, and began to play with some glass chesspieces I had lying about.

I’ve been wanting to play with this light table for a while, and finding these chesspieces gave me just the excuse. I suspect I’ll use it with some other images of bottom-lit glass and liquids. Should be some fun experimenting.

Our Bernese Mountain Dog pup, Bailey, was lounging in Becky’s lap, sporting the sheepish look of someone caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

New Hosting

Last night, I finished moving both domains to Dreamhost. It’s my belief that this will improve my uptime, and make things a big more responsive.

Agility Class

I’ve had the good fortune to have photographed at a friend’s agility field for the last two weekends. Needless to say, it’s been a hoot! Great dogs and owners, all learning to work together better as a team.

Above is Chloe, one of the dogs I had the pleasure of photographing on the course. She’s a wonderful, friendly dog, and very photogenic!

Off the Clock

Myself and four other photographers will begin an exhibit in a couple of weeks. We’ve titled it Off the Clock, and it will premiere at The Old Orchard Gallery in Webster Groves MO on October 11th. We’ll be hosting a reception on October 17th from 6pm to 9pm.
